Where are you and your band from?

Even though, Tiavara is a fairly diverse band most of us come from a small town Korolev just outside of Moscow. It is a space capital of Russia which was purpose built to send a man to space. Our vocalist Arthur was born and raised in an Armenian city Vanadzor, but now he also lives in Korolev.

What type of music did you hear the most growing up?

Danila (drums): I have a funny story about that. My father was always a huge influence on my taste in music and he got me into Rammstein and System of a Down. I remember one day I came home from school and while we were having dinner my dad said: “Today I’ve heard that band, Slayer, it was so heavy, too heavy to even own a CD, might be bad for your psyche.” That was enough to convince me that I had to hear that band no matter what! About a week later my friend brought a magazine to school with ringtone download codes and, lo and behold, there was a 30 second ringtone from the song “Bitter Peace”.

Tikhon (lead guitar): When I was little I used to love 50 Cent and Beyonce. I even owned 50 Cent’s full discography on CDs. As I grew older I wanted to listen to what my brother was listening, but he told me that I was not allowed to because I was to young for that. Eventually, he gave me a sneak peak a Slayer song and it hit me that I must be a heavy metal fan. After that I got my first iPod player and uploaded all kinds of metal songs on it. Especially I enjoyed listening to Lamb of God. Up until this day Lamb of God has always remained my favourite band.

What made you first realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?

Tikhon: I always wanted to play drums. However there was no teacher available and my parents convinced me that I should learn to play guitar first. It didn’t take long for me to fall in love with the guitar (even though sometimes I enjoy playing my brother’s drum set) and playing my very first show I loved the energy I’ve felt from facing a crowd. Afterwards people told me that I was kind of a freak. I loved that they saw me that way and I realised that I don’t want to be like everybody else.

Danila: I’ve been listening to metal for as long as I can remember and music was always a big part of my life. I mostly envisioned myself as a singer though, and it wasn’t until I was 16 that I found my place behind the drums.

What sets you apart from other bands/artists today?

Tikhon: I believe that we have two main differences with everybody else. First of all, it’s vocals. I have never heard a singer like Arte. Even though he sings in a clear voice he doesn’t sound like a symphonic vocalist. I truly believe that I would be able to listen him sing 24/7 and it would never get annoying. On the other hand is music. I do not run after technique nor speed. I play what I really feel at the moment. Our songs are simple, but powerful. We always have a distinct groove and we always try to make our listeners move. We are also very different in terms of our stage appearance. We believe that the performance is always about emotions and feelings. Even though we play extremely accurately on stage we give all to the movements and stage choreography. We deliver the emotions we have and we share our feelings with the audience. Nothing is more important than the connection with our listeners.

For those who have never seen or heard your music before, how would you describe your music for the public audience?

Tikhon: Our music is something that you have never heard before, but at the same time it speaks to you. It has its own groove and rhythm. True fact, one of my instagram followers commented on one of the songs: “Dat breakdown. Makes me want to ride into battle with hells army behind me.” I think that no more words are necessary.

If you had to categorize your music, what genre would it best fit?

Tikhon: I don’t think that there is a particular fitting genre to describe our music. I believe that our music is different to the degree that none of the genres directly relate to us.

Danila: We usually simply state that we play metal or alternative metal. We don’t try to sound like anyone and we write whatever we feel like as long as it fits our sound.

Are there any stories surrounding your songs that you’d care to share?

Danila: When we started rehearsing our upcoming single When Silence Reigns we showed it to our manager. About half a year later when we received mixes for our upcoming album, he was blow away by that song and said: “Hey, why didn’t you show me this one before?” I think he still doesn’t believe us that it’s the same song, but ever since then it was clear to everyone that When Silence Reigns was going to be a single and one of the most important songs of the album.

Tikhon: In the song The Empty Sky during a rehearsal I hit a dissonant note by accident and guess what? It’s now part of the song.

What do you do with your time away from music?

Danila: Tikhon and Egor (keys, percussion, back vocals) are the athletes of our band. Egor spends a lot of his free time at the gym while Tikhon is a part of the Purdue rowing team who also does a lot of weight lifting. Alexandr (rhythm guitar), Tikhon and Rost (bass) love computers and programming. We all like to party and our vocalist Arte is a DJ and sound engineer at a local nightclub/karaoke. As for myself, I like reading and can also be found at the gym or a party.

Any upcoming shows/tours/news?

Danila: Right now we are focused on releasing our upcoming album, which will be probably followed by a few shows in Russia. We are also in the process of working out logistics for a European tour and if that goes well we might aim for the US next. – MB
