Tell us about your new EP, Dopamine. Is there a theme behind it?

Lyrically, the EP deals with a lot, from bullying to unhealthy relationships to difficulties on the road and everything in-between. Sonically, we wanted to take it to a much rawer place than our previous recordings, so it sounds very spontaneous, dirty, and mean.

How did you decide on the EP title?

Dopamine (the chemical) is a sort of reinforcing agent for your body. That can be good or bad, depending on what exactly it’s reinforcing. We thought that was a great metaphor to tie in the lyrical content of the EP.

The two of you are on the road the majority of the year together. How do you pass time in the van?

Podcasts and audio-books are a great way to pass the time. Enjoying silence is also a nice break from loudness of being at shows every night.

Do you have any pre-show rituals?

Not really. We stretch, warm up our voices, warm up our hands. That’s really about it.

What is your favorite song to play live?

We have a song called “Jeffrey” that we’ll hopefully put on the next recording, that we love. It’s sort of a mid-tempo head bobber. Really fun to play!

Do you have a favorite city to play in and why?

Austin is probably our favorite. The South has a rich tradition of southern rock, so they tend to “get it” right away.

If two or three other bands got together and made a baby, who would In The Whale’s parents be?

Quicksand, Helmet, and Clutch

In the Whale is celebrating 7 years as a band. Looking back on the last 7 years, is there anything you would do differently?

We would’ve become Sound-cloud rappers.

What is next for In The Whale?

Lots of touring and hopefully playing some festivals next year! – AB
