On September 15th, Sun Diego’s Bash At The Beach Surf, Skate, and Festival went down at Belmont Park in Mission Beach. The event had over $10,000 in prize money up for grabs in the various surf & skate contests.

The day was perfect for an event like this. The sky was overcast making it a mild day at the end of a summer heatwave. The morning started with the street portion of tricks for cash. There were 4 separate heats of skaters attempting to dominate the replicas of two iconic San Diego stair sets; the City College 12 stair and the SDSU 9 stair, which also included the UCSD out ledge.

The morning was full of epic tricks with a talented mix of Pros & Ams looking to get a piece of the cash. Lots of cash was handed out, but the winners of the big checks were Santana Saldana who was the MVP of the day and master of the SDSU Kink. Santana also put down a nollie heal down the big set and did a 270 lip slide on the handrail. Josh Douglas did a nollie flipboard slide on the handrail which secured him as the champion of the City College 12 stair set. Darius “Woogie” Jackson walked away holding the title for his dominance of the UCSD Out Ledge.

After the street contest wrapped up, we moved over to the vert ramp for a demo by the legends of the half pipe, such as Christian Hosoi and Tony Magnuson.

Next up the ladies hit the vert where we had the pleasure of watching Bryce Wettstein and Jordan Barrett do some doubles, as well as several other of the top female vert skaters show us that “skate like a girl” is no longer a bad thing. The ladies threw it down and left the guys with some big shoes to fill.

We then moved on to the men where we saw epic skating. Beaver Fleming, Reef Orlando, Yoda, Zach Miller, and AJ Nelson, were just a few of the talented pros who didn’t hold back as they battled for their piece of the $10,000.

As always, Sun Diego put on an awesome event that showcased some of the most talented local skaters and pros.
