Tell us about your new single.
“Better Off” is a genre bending anthem for the overlooked. It is the first ever song that August, Zach, and I (Joe) wrote together. We all went to August’s cottage for the weekend and locked ourselves up writing as many songs as possible. This is the first of many to be released from that session and was recorded and produced in its entirety in August’s bedroom studio.
Is there a lyric you’d like to highlight? “Are you in love with him?
Or just scared of what we could be” I think this is something that many people can relate to. So often you see people you care about sticking to what they know instead of taking the plunge into something that could be better.
How did AUGUSTA as a project first come together?
AUGUSTA started as an evolution from my original project, A Fellow Ship. After many years together, A Fellow Ship went their separate ways in 2020. I began to collaborate with August Jones, Zach Stuckey, and Parker Weiss and we immediately started to blend our musical identities. In 2022, we made our debut on the Toronto music scene with a headline show at the iconic Lee’s Palace.
Describe your sound in 3 words.
Alternative, Horn, Rock
Who did you work with on the track?
“Better Off” was written, recorded, and produced by members of AUGUSTA. It was a mix by our very own August Jones and our incredibly talented friend, Devin Bourbonnais. It was mastered at Lacquer channel by Phil Demestro.
What has been the biggest change for you as a band over the past year?
The biggest change for us over the last year was the decision to record and produce all our music ourselves. I’ve spent tons of time and money in the past working at big studios and was never quite able to capture the energy that I had envisioned. When August and I teamed up to form AUGUSTA, that all changed. We started making demos using August’s home studio, and it very quickly became clear that without the pressure and time constraints of working at a big studio we were finally able to capture the energy of our live show. This is demonstrated on our first two singles, “Little Birds” and “ Better Off”.
Where would you perform tomorrow, if you could go anywhere in the world?
Red Rocks amphitheater. Need I say more?
What is next for AUGUSTA?
We are currently hard at work on our debut EP, which is expected in June of 2023. We will also be touring to support this release, so stay tuned for more announcements and be sure to catch us supporting Blue Rodeo at Tall Pines Music Festival this June.
