We all got into skating because of somebody-who got you into it?

7 years ago, my best friend Cory Byrd got me into skating, gave me my first setup, and taught me the basics. 7 years later, I am now sitting on a plane as a sponsored skateboarder, traveling for skateboarding, doing a skateboard magazine interview! #BlessUp

What’s your first set up and trick?

My first setup was a Star Wars skateboard complete that my mom bought me for Christmas one year. I don’t remember what my first trick on it was though.

Your first ad and/or hookup (brand or shop)?

Leap of Faith Skateboards, a skateboard company based out of the East Coast, started flowing me boards in 2012. I rode for them until they went out of business in 2013.

What’s your Personal highlight in skating up to this point?

2016 in a whole has been my personal highlight in skating up to this point. From being featured on the @berrics and @sls social media accounts, to making the front page of my local newspaper twice, twenty sixteen has definitely been the most productive and successful year so far!

What’s your favorite spot (city, country, diy) to shred and why?

My favorite spot right now to shred is JKwon in LA. The ledges are super buttery, the ground is pretty much perfect, and it’s handrail is somewhat of a decent size! It’s a bust sometimes due to cops and security, so if you’re in Koreatown make sure to go there early morning or late evening.

A spot you wish you could of skated but never did?

I really wish I could have skated Clipper Ledge in SF. Landing a trick down that hubba would’ve landed a check mark on my bucket list. Somehow, that legendary spot almost always managed to end up in multiple video parts as someone’s ender. Rest In Peace…

Who in your crew deserves some shine ad why?

The KC homie Shaun McKay definitely deserves some shine! I skate with him all the time back home and he literally does the hardest tricks first try or within a couple of tries. Watching him skateboard in person blows my mind because he makes everything look so easy. Shaun’s personally one of my favorite skateboarders and is also one of the best, if not the best in Missouri!

If your not skating-what else do you like to do?

When I’m not skating I like to explore nature, go to concerts, hang out with family and friends, listen to music, read skateboard and urban fashion magazines, take photos, thrift shop, watch skateboard videos, and workout at the gym.

What’s your plans for the next 12 months?

For the next 12 months I plan on living in KC and flying out to Cali consistently to put in work. My board sponsor, Finesse Skateboards, is coming out with a full-length video in 2017, so I’ll mainly be out in the streets filming for that. I’d also like to compete in a few of the Boardr AM and SPoT Damn AM events if possible.

Anything you want to say to the upcomers or any shout-outs?

Just have fun and count your blessings.

I’d like to give a shout-out and thanks to God, my mom and sisters, my dad, my extended family, my best friends, my connect group, my artists, my filmers, my photographers, my manager Dom Chronicles, Damien from Immortal Laces, Steve from Finesse Skateboards, The Loop KC, Webb from Black Sheep Apparel Co, Tommie from True Skateboard Mag, Toriano from The Kansas City Star, Scumlife, and last but not least the people of KC!

Love y’all!!! – JD
